Self Improvement Books – What Are Your Favourites
June 12, 2010 by Renee
Self Improvement Books – they cover a huge section in nearly every bookshop these days. But which one should you read? What is right for you?
What Are Self Improvement Books?
As Self Improvement is a huge topic there is a wide range of book available. So in a bookshop they might not be all in one place. If you don’t find what you need in the “Self Help” Section why not have a look in the following sections:
- Finance / Wealth Creation
- Health / Fitness
- Psychology / Relationships
- Learning / Motivation
You can find books to support you self improvement in any of these areas.
Where To Get Good Self Improvement Books
I am a fan of researching nearly everything online, but I will always love to visit a good bookshop – or library. Maybe it shows my age, but I will always prefer a paper book to reading full books online
.
But for free material (free ebooks) the internet is unbeatable! Have a look at my favourite ebooks.
Most of the online bookshops these days also offer used books which can be a whole lot cheaper compared to the brand new version. And why not try Auction houses like ebay?
My Favourite Self Improvement Books
I am by far not finished with my Self Improvement Journey, but I have a couple of Self Improvement Books that I have read and can really recommend already. I will update this list with my most favourite from now on, so keep checking back.
This list is by far not complete, and I really would love to hear from you in the comments about Your favourite Self Improvement Books.
Finance / Wealth Creation:
- Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert T. Kiyosaki – because it questioned my understanding of how to create wealth
- Year of the Blogger by Sean Rasmussen – because it showed me how to make money in my own time online
Health / Fitness
- Hurry Up and Meditate by David Michie and Nicholas Bell, because it gave me a great introduction to meditation and its benefits
Psychology / Relationships
- Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff – and it’s all small stuff by Richard Carlson, because it reminds me to see the big picture
Learning / Motivation
- Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill – because it motivates me to get after what I want (available as FREE ebook)

Hi Renee,
Louise Hay’s book “How To Heal Your Life” is the first self help book from the early 90’s that I can recall that helped me very much at that time. Her writings gave me a tremendous amount of relief from a very stressful situation and it was almost instantaneous relief. Amazing!
The others mentioned in this article are also my favourites including Year of the Blogger and Rich Dad, Poor Dad.
Very nice article and interesting topic, Thank-you.
Hello Jill,
thanks for your comment. Louise Hay has written some great books. I do love her cards with helpful affirmations that I place around my house so I see them all the time.
Hi Renee,
A most interesting topic dear to my heart. I guess in some ways, poetry and the classics first sparked my interest in the field of self, while I was at school.. My interest has only been fuelled since.
We live in such an amazing time, with a world-wide wealth of ideas available to all on a scale greater than ever. Technology certainly has its uses.
Thanks for the mention of ‘Hurry up and Meditate’ – I hadn’t heard of it, but since reading your post, the words keep ringing in my ears.. Looks like I’m off to the shops again.

Hi Renee,
Self improvement books are a gold mine for knowledge. They provide access to successful people when YOU are available. And you can read the books again and again.
A few self improvement books that I recommend are: The Four Hour Work Week, The E-Myth, Influence: Science and Practice and of course: How to Win Friends and Influence People.
I also recommend reading self improvement books with a notepad, and writing up the notes after you finish the book. I keep all my notes on file – and this helps me ‘re-read’ the book in only a few minutes.

Oh, There have been so many self help books that I’ve read over the years. Most were helpful in some way. I think the top three that actually helped me change my life were:
How to get control of your time and your life. by Alan Lakein (very dated now)
A new guide to Rational Living. by Albert Ellis.
The Introvert Advantage by Marti Olsen Laney
Hello Renee,
I am a mad book worm, with reading more books then I have time for!! Actually at the moment I have three books on the go
I have read so many that gets my attention, but at the moment my favorite is “Wake Up And Dream” by Pat Mesiti.
I have read “think and Grow Rich” lots and lots of times…!
and Rich Dad Poor Dad.
There are so many great books, and like you I prefer hard cover over ebooks
Great to see another book worm out here

Cheers

Hi Lisa,
yes, I am an admitting book worm as well
I haven’t read “Wake up and Dream” yet but if it is your favourite I will have a look at it. “Think and Grow Rich” definitely is one of my favourites as well!
Hi Renee,
The matriarch of Self Improvement, Louise Hays has been an inspiration for many many years. Her book ‘Heal Your Body’ is one that I refer to a lot to understand the metaphysical meanings behind specific conditions and integrate the corresponding affirmations, both personally and for clients.
I love your article. Thanks.

Hi Renee,
This one gave me a 12.5% pay increase after reading it and putting in some actions suggested in the book. I have many pages and sentences highlighted and go back to read then when I need a bit of motivation.
The Book ‘The Magic of Think Big’ by Dr. David J. Schwartz it was written many years ago and has been re-printed many times with updates to bring it inline to today.

I don’t usually like self improvement books, but I must say that Napoleon Hill’s “Think & Grow Rich” coupled with Kiyosaki’s “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” are truly inspirational.
